, â€Å"Nature makes the boy toward, nurture sees him forward.?Even though nature plays a role in defining sex and gender, nurture plays the greater part in helping society define the two terms. Definitions come from that which is learned, not that which is part of our genetic system. John Locke believed that all people were born with a blank slate (a tabula rasa.) Him and other Empiricists thought that experiences were written into the mind and that every aspect of human behavior is acquired from the environment that surrounds them. Take for example the story which Susan Baxter tells in her article ‘The Last Word on Gender Differences?of the boy who was castrated at birth and raised as a girl. â€Å"Amazingly, this boy had an identical twin brother, which made it possible to compare two genetically identical individuals raised as a boy and a girl... our hero became the perfect little girl, the very picture of adorable femininity.?(Baxter 52) This boy was clearly raised as a girl and he grew up thinking of himself as a girl. Free Essays on Nature Nurture Free Essays on Nature Nurture Nature vs. Nurture; The Great Debate One of the most controversial debates of modern society is the idea that our â€Å"natures?and how we are nurtured are in conflict with each other to determine what defines who we are. When one attempts to define sex and gender, he/she often finds him/herself stumped as to what the definitions are. More so, one is puzzled by where the came from. How do nature and nurture influence the definitions of sex and gender? To understand how nature and nurture affect these definitions, we must first know what they are. Sex is biological while gender is socially constructed. Genes produce sex. It exists in itself, and is sublimely indifferent to what humans think of it. Gender is the meanings that society assigns to sex. Richard Mulcaster wrote the words, â€Å"Nature makes the boy toward, nurture sees him forward.?Even though nature plays a role in defining sex and gender, nurture plays the greater part in helping society define the two terms. Corporate Social Responsibility and Areas of Impact Assignment

Corporate Social Responsibility and Areas of Impact - Assignment Example It respects cultural differences and finds the business opportunities in building the skills of employees, the community and the government".  Other definitions from the same report define CSR as the â€Å"business of giving back to society† In the United States, CSR has been defined more in terms of a philanthropic model in that companies are free to make profits by any means available then donate a certain share of the profits to charitable causes. For the company to receive any benefit from the giving is seen as tainting the act. Interestingly enough the European model is much more focused on operating the core business in a socially responsible way, complemented by investment in communities for solid business case reasons. Social responsibility becomes an integral part of the wealth creation process - which if managed properly should enhance the competitiveness of business and maximize the value of wealth creation to society. For instance, the CSR definition used in the by Business for Social Responsibility is: "Operating a business in a manner that meets or exceeds the ethical, legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business. On the other hand, the European Commission hedges its bets with two definitions wrapped into one:  "A concept whereby companies decide voluntarily to contribute to a better society and a cleaner environment. A concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary. When you review each of these, they broadly agree that the definition now focuses on the impact of how you manage your core business. Some go further than others in prescribing how far companies go beyond managing their own impact into the terrain of acting specifically outside of that focus to make a contribution to the achievement of broader societal goals. It is a key difference when many business leaders feel that  their companies are ill-equipped to pursue broader societal goals, and activists argue that companies have no democratic legitimacy to take such roles.

Warrants Essay Example for Free

Warrants Essay The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. (1) These words of the Fourth Amendment give the people protection against unnecessary harassment by local, state and federal law enforcements. Authorities have to go through a process to acquire a warrant to search homes, papers, effects and persons with probable cause. However, there is a rationale for a warrantless search. This poses the questions: What is the rationale for allowing warrantless searches, are those reasons persuasive and do all such searches require that probable cause exist or are there exceptions? The definition of a warrant is a writ permitting or directing someone to take some action. Often, the term refers to a writ from a judge; permitting law enforcement personnel to take some action, such as: make an arrest, search a location, or seize some piece of property. (1) There are many different types of warrants. Some include: a search warrant, an arrest warrant, an anticipatory warrant, and a no-knock warrant. A Search Warrant is an order signed by a judge that directs owners of private property to allow the police to enter and search for items named in the warrant. Judges wont issue a warrant unless they have been convinced by the police that there is probable cause for the search that reliable evidence shows that its more likely than not that a crime has occurred and that the items sought by the police are connected with it and will be found at the location named in the warrant. In limited situations, the police may search without a warrant, but they cannot use what they find at trial if the defense can show that they had no probable cause for the search. An Arrest Warrant is a document issued by a judge or magistrate that authorizes the police to arrest someone. Warrants are issued when law enforcement personnel present evidence to judges or magistrates that convince them that it is reasonably likely that a crime has taken place and that the person to be named in the warrant is criminally responsible for that crime. An Anticipatory Warrant is a warrant that is based on an affidavit that shows probable cause that evidence of a particular crime will be at a specified location at some time in the future. A No-Knock Warrant is a search warrant authorizing police officers to enter certain premises without first knocking and announcing their presence or purpose prior to entering the premises. (2) Each of these warrants must first be approved by a judge or a magistrate and must meet certain requirements. The authorities must go through a process to obtain a warrant. Only judges may issue search warrants. Search warrants must be specific and reasonable before they are granted by the judge in a court of law. To obtain a warrant, law enforcement officers must show that there is probable cause to believe a search is justified. Probable cause is the amount and quality of information police must have before they can search or arrest without a warrant. (3) Some of the specifics they must include are of the following: If one room of a house is listed on the search warrant than only that room can be searched. If other rooms need to be searched than another warrant must be obtained by law enforcement officials. If a vehicle needs to be searched on a property, a separate warrant needs to be obtained for the vehicle. And the warrant must be of reasonable inclusivity. (2) If these requirements are not met, then the judge will not grant the warrant. Courts use a reasonableness test when considering whether a search violates the federal Constitution. This reasonableness test preempts other state and federal laws. If a â€Å"no-knock† entry is unreasonable at the time police execute a search warrant, they must â€Å"knock and announce† their presence, even if they have a no-knock warrant. 4) This is where the Exclusionary Rule comes into play. The exclusionary rule prevents the government from using most evidence gathered in violation of the United States Constitution. It applies to evidence gained from an unreasonable search or seizure in violation of the Fourth Amendment. It is defined as a rule of evidence that disallows the use of illegally obtained evidence in criminal trials. (4) Warrants must be issued before authorities can search and seize property and if they do not obtain a warrant first they are violating a person’s Miranda Rights. Although in most cases a warrant is required, there are a few situations in which there are exceptions to needing probable cause for a warrant. A warrant is not needed is in a time of consent. If a police officer stops you and you consent to allowing him to search your car, a warrant is not needed. If anything illegal is found on you or on your property then those items can be confiscated and you can be arrested. Another time is when illegal items are in plain view of an officer during a traffic stop or during a routine police procedure. Items in plain view can be drugs, weapons, or stolen goods. However, plain view only comes into effect when the officer is lawfully on the premises. During a traffic stop, if a police officer arrests the driver of a vehicle, they are then allowed to search the car and its compartments for contraband and weapons without a search warrant. When a person is arrested in their house or their office building the officer is allowed to legally search the room that they arrested the suspect in and perform a protective sweep of the building to check if there are other people hiding in the building. And most importantly, a search can be conducted without a search warrant when police officers feel that the public is in danger during any emergency situations. (2) When driving onto a military base there is a clear sign that states the standing warrant that if you pass through the gates you are consenting to allowing the Military Police search your car if they feel the need to. And when you drive onto a base you are guaranteed to see at least one random car search every time. Not every situation calls for a warrant needed to search homes, papers, effects and persons with probable cause. Law enforcement is required to obtain a warrant issued by a magistrate or a judge in a court of law. If said warrant is not issued and authorities still search you, all evidence they find will be thrown out. However, there are certain terms in which a warrant is not required. The words of the Fourth Amendment give the people protection against unnecessary harassment by local, state and federal law enforcements.

The Growth of Mothers and Daughters in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club :: Joy Luck Club Essays

The Growth of Mothers and Daughters in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club Every twelve months of every year the seasons change from spring, summer, fall and then winter.   The cycle repeats itself every year having similar weather conditions as the previous season before.   Like the four seasons mother and daughter are very similar in the way they change and grow throughout time.   A mother learns from her mother and then passes on her morals and rituals on to her daughters.   As the daughters grow with age they have a tendency to take on many qualities of their mothers such as their cultural ways and some day they will pass these traits onto their children.   Through years of experience and hard work, Amy Tan shows the viewers the experiences of the mother and daughters while growing up in Chinese and American lifestyles. Many of the women in the novel had great characteristics, which represented them as strong and faithful women.   One example of this is An-Mei and her daughter Rose.   When An-Mei was a child her mother was not in her life, she had re-married a man name Wu-Tsing, and she was then known as a concubine.   An-Mei’s mother was the third wife of three and in a Chinese family, re-marrying after being a widow is a shameful act.   An-Mei did eventually meet her mother and she learned a great deal from her.   She was always told to wear her best clothes when she was in the presence of her family and she even taught An-Mei a recipe that was intended to save lives.   Popo An-Mei’s mother was dying and this is what she told her daughter Rose.   â€Å"This is how a daughter honors her mother.   It is shou so deep it is in your bones.   The pain of flesh is nothing.   The pain you must forget.   Because sometimes that is the only way to remember what is in your bones.   You must peel off your skin, and that of your mothers, and her mother before her.   Until there is nothing.   No scar, no skin, no flesh.† (Tan 41)   An-mei’s mother had removed a chunk of flesh from her arm; it had her blood, her mother’s blood, and her grandmother’s blood in it.   In this ritual a life was supposed to be saved, it was considered magic.  Ã‚   An-Mei left with her mother to live with her and her new husband after her popo passed away.

Review of rahomomn

‘Rashomon' directed by Kurosawa is considered one of the most highly ranked foreign films. This film was made in the early 50's and was one of the first films to introduce the element of flashbacks. The film is entirely based on the concept of flashback with 3 witnesses; all giving their accounts on the murder that had taken place. All 3 take the blame upon them and confess to have been the culprits. There is a build up of confusion at this point and constant questions are raised as to who is the real culprit? And who has wronged whom? Rashomon' portrays flashbacks unlike any other, and explains how flashbacks are about both the truth and the false. The truth is presented through the events the witnesses think took place or experienced. The false aspect however, comes in as Kurosawa explains how human beings are wired in a way that they can never tell stories involving them without using manipulation. The other thing that is absolutely hard to miss is the phenomenal skill of the actors in the film. For someone who is alien to the language of the film, it usually becomes ard to understand what is really going on, however in ‘Rashomon', despite it being in Japanese and the subtitles being off, it is relatively easy to understand what is going on because of the exaggerated acting of the actors. The acting is so expressive and it may not necessarily explain every detail of the plot, but one can say that language is no longer a great barrier. Also, the film was more or less silent and based on the actions and emotions rather than the dialogues. This is similar to a silent film, and for this reason it is easier for an alien viewer to comprehend too. The setting also plays an extremely important role in portraying the behavior of the characters and to get a better understanding of the plot! In my opinion there are two distinct settings, that of the wilderness and that of the temple. There is a clear difference in the behavior of the characters in the wilderne ss and that in the temple. I find that since the rape and the murder both take place in the forest too, it throws light on the fact that the behavior in the wilderness is not controlled, and rather savage.Whereas the behavior in the temple is more composed and sane. This leads me to my next point, which is that often our surrounding has a great impact on us and almost has a direct effect on our environment. The behavior of the two men fghting in the forest reminded me of savages. It was as though all their emotions and feelings had touched the surface and they were no longer in any state to behave in a composed manner. This is very similar to another film I had watched, called â€Å"Heart of darkness† by Joseph Conrad. Just like in that film, ‘Rashomon' too, reveals layers of human behavior. There are also humorous moments intertwined in the film to break the serious mood, almost acting like a comic relief. The entire film is shot in black and white, which serves as a gl oomy atmosphere, but also highlights the darkness of the events that take place in the movie. The director nas paid attention to every small detail in movie, be it the setting, the use of dialogues, the importance of the seasons etc. For instance, the movie opens with the scene of heavy rainfall; this may or may not be foreboding and suggestive of the darkness of the events that may take place.

Steroids in Sports

Steroids in Sports In many places around the world today, sports competitions are increasing in popularity due to the quest to win, to be the best. Many athletes will do anything to win, whether that means breaking the rules or cheating. The desire to win is imbedded into all humans, especially when professional athletes of today’s age are becoming icons and are viewed as figures of greatness by their rare abilities to perform at such a high level. The quest for money and fame is also a common reason for athletes to cheat or bend the rules.Steroid use is the most common form of cheating in all sports today. Other than the fact that they are harmful to your body, they are taking away from sports and sending the wrong messages to aspiring athletes. The issue that is currently being addressed in the sports industry is that if so many people are already using steroids, such as bodybuilders and athletes, then why not make them legal and let people use them at their own risk? Or rat her should we just keep them illegal due to their harmful health risks and promotion of unfair advantages in sports? Before getting into the ethical concerns about the legalization of steroids, let’s talk about what steroids are and how they work. A steroid is a synthetic substance similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. The most common use of steroids is having them injected into skeletal muscles or they are taken in powder and pill form. There are so many types of steroids and each of them has its own value. Many types of steroids are used for medical conditions and health problems. These types of steroids are prescribed by doctors. Any type of steroid that is not prescribed by a doctor is illegal.Steroids that are taken by athletes and other abusers take them in cycles of weeks and months. This is called cycling. Cycling involves taking several doses of steroids over a definite period of time, stopping for a period, and then starting again. Along with this method, ste roid users often use the â€Å"stacking† method during their cycles (NIDA 1). This is when users will combine several different types of steroids to get maximal results while minimizing negative effects. There are many effects from the use of steroids, some positive and some negative.Though there are more negative effects then there are positive ones, many of the positive effects of steroids include treatment for medical conditions. Anabolic steroids can be legally prescribed to treat conditions like delayed puberty as well as diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass, such as cancer and AIDS (NIDA 1). Short term effects of steroids are the ability to train harder and longer and an increase in lean muscle mass and strength. Minor negative side-effects include excessive hair growth, oily skin, acne, and a deepening voice. These are just minor short term side-effects though. The effects of steroid use that are the main concerns of users are increased risk of cancer, heart attack and liver disease. Also, increased blood pressure, increased risk of atherosclerosis, and obstructive sleep apnea may occur (NIDA 2). For men, shrinkage of the testicles, baldness, and risk of prostate cancer are things to be aware of. For women, common side-effects are facial hair, male-pattern baldness, and a deepening voice. Lastly, adolescence taking steroids may stunt their growth and accelerate puberty changes. The use of steroids in baseball has been revealed, and was put out in the open. Steroids have been utilized in baseball for decades, but just lately have arrived into the lime light. In the summer of 2003, the USADA obtains a secret fluid, brought in anonymously. This fluid, ‘the clear', turns out to be Tetrahydrogestrinone. It's an untraceable steroid utilized by some of the world's top athletes. Later it is disclosed that Trevor Graham, a sprint adviser to some of the elite sprinters, submitted the steroid and the baseball steroid era began. The steroid wa s traced back to Victor Conte at BALCO labs, and it is finally discovered out that Patrick Arnold was the pharmacist who evolved the steroid. Barry Bonds' name is cited as one of BALCO's large-scale clients. In fall of 2004, steroid checking starts under the MLB's new collective bargaining agreement. Barry Bonds undergoes random checking, and proceeds on to win his 7th organization MVP. Over the next couple of years, some athletes are connected to BALCO and anabolic steroids. Many athletes came ahead and accepted their steroid usage while some still asserted innocence. In 2007, previous Senator George Mitchell issues a 409 piece report, after a 21 month enquiry considering steroids in baseball. The report titles 89 people engaged in baseball who have are suspect of utilizing steroids. Again, some athletes eventually accept to utilizing steroids, while there are still numerous, which have been suspect, deny utilizing anabolic steroids. In the years after 2007, more proof is discovered opposing many MLB players and some apologies are made. Anabolic steroids are still utilized in baseball today, and ball players still undergo drug tests.Professional sports needs the most gifted athletes in the world, and people will manage anything they can to get the intended for display, even if it is endangering their career. Tetrahydrogestrinone, opened the eyes of newspapers and followers around the world to not only steroid use in baseball, but steroid use in all sports. Not a day goes by without hearing about a steroid associated case, or an athlete failing the drug test. Fans and parents anticipate professional athletes to be models. Because of baseball's steroid scandal, steroids are better liked than ever, in both adults, and teens.Several associations, and retired athletes, for example Jose Canseco, are now conversing to juvenile teens about steroid edge consequences, steroid misuse, and hazards of anabolic steroids. Major League Baseball had an established steroid rule which was made in 2002. Under this rule, a first time violation would only result in therapy for the player. Not one contestant was ever suspended. After the BALCO scandal, Major League Baseball eventually determined to buckle down and topic harsher punishments for steroid users. The new principle, which was acknowledged by Major League Baseball players, was handed out at the start of the 2005. It stated that the first positive test will result in a suspension of up to ten days. The second positive test will result in a suspension of thirty days. The third positive test will result in a suspension of sixty days. The fourth positive test will result in a suspension of one full year. Finally, the fifth positive test will outcome in a punishment at the discretion of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.Players will be checked not less than one time per year, with a possibility that some players can be checked many times per year. Bud Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Basebal l, successfully made the living principle and has suggested even harder punishments for positive tests than the ones in place today. The new punishments that Bud Selig has suggested are a â€Å"three strikes and you're out approach†. This is that the first positive test would result in a fifty game suspension. The second positive test would result in a one-hundred game suspension. Finally, the third positive test would result in a lifetime suspension from Major League Baseball. These new suggested punishments are much harsher than either of the first two, although, they should be acknowledged by both the players before any changes can be made. Under the present rule, the first Major League ballplayers have been suspended for checking positive. The Mitchell Report, or Report to the Commissioner of Baseball of an Independent Investigation into the Illegal Use of Steroids and Other Performance Enhancing Substances by Players in Major League Baseball, is the outcome of previous Un ited States Senator George J.Mitchell's enquiry into the use of anabolic steroids and human development hormone in Major League Baseball. The 409-page Mitchell Report, issued on December 13, 2007, shows the use of illegal game enhancing substances by players and the effectiveness of the MLB pharmaceutical checking program. It's still present that Senator Mitchell's recommendations considering the management of past illegal drug use and future avoidance practices. The Mitchell Report names eighty-nine Major League Baseball players who are supposed to have used steroids or drugs.George Mitchell, a previous United States Senator and prosecutor, was nominated by Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on March 30, 2006 to enquire the use of performance-enhancing drugs in MLB. Mitchell was nominated throughout a time of argument over the journal Game of Shadows, which chronicles thought complete use of performance-enhancing drugs, around some distinct kinds of steroids and development hormone by Barry Bonds. Bud Selig determined to start the method of ending the illegal use of steroids and performance enhancing drugs after reading Game of Shadows. The term was made after some influential people of the US Congress made opposing remarks about the effectiveness and honesty of MLB anti-performance enhancing drug policies. In recent news in sports today, many players are being caught using illegal substances of performance enhancing drugs. For example, San Francisco Giants outfielder, Melky Cabrera, was caught using illegal performance enhancing drugs late in the 2012 season. He was sentenced to the 50 game suspension and this also takes a toll on his popularity which was increasing due to his MVP caliber stats. His suspension is the most significant in-season ban by MLB since Manny Ramirez received his first 50-game suspension in 2009† (Lacques 1). Though the Giants won the World Series without Melky Cabrera, they most likely will not offer him a contract extension in the 2013 season, in which he will be a free agent. Steroids may also cause inner turmoil within players. They may become disliked by other teammates because they are harming themselves and cheating. It is not fair to those who don’t take steroids and work out hard to make themselves become a better player. For example, Dustin Pedroia, 5’ 6† second baseman for the Red Sox, won MVP of the league in 2008 without any steroid use. On the other hand, Alex Rodriguez, Yankees third baseman, who has won multiple MVP’s recently admitted to three years of steroid use. As far as the fans know, steroids could have helped him during his years of greatness. That leaves many people to believe he is a great player, but did not put in the hard work like Dustin, who earned the respect of millions with his work ethic and determination.I believe that the use of steroids or any performance enhancing drugs should remain illegal in sports. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)  division on anti-doping believes that â€Å"doping jeopardizes the moral and ethical basis of sport and the health of those involved in it†Ã‚  (Ashby 1). I agree with UNESCO because steroids will cause an unfair advantage for many people in sports. Sports will no longer be about who has the most talents or puts the most work into becoming better but more about who has the better steroids to make them better. The National Football League created its own policy on steroids and performance enhancing drugs because they believe it threatens the integrity of athletic competition (Ashby 1). Many people are beginning to believe that legalizing steroids will benefit sports because it will create a higher, faster level of play. It is also argued that since many athletes are being caught using them anyways that they should just be made legal to stop with the suspensions and taking away of titles earned by players while using steroids. For example, the US Anti-Doping Agency stripped cyclist Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and banned him from the sport for life for doping. There are some who believe it is wrong to take his titles away but in my belief I think that it is only right for his titles to be stripped. Well, maybe not all seven of them, but the ones in which he was using steroids during. There are many psychological and physical side effects to your body from continued steroid use. Psychologically, a player may go from a state of well-being to a state of depression.Players tend to have outbursts known as â€Å"roid rage†, which is a feeling insecurity when they are playing bad even though they are on this drug. Mood swings and intense aggression and violence have also been known to occur. Some players feel that steroid use will benefit their career by making them a better player. This is not true. Most are looking for a quick way to increase their speed, endurance, muscle mass and physical size. They want to have a stronger physique which gives them confidence as well as strength to perform better on the baseball field. Some also tend to get addicted to the steroid habit. Some players who have been injured, mildly or dramatically, require this drug to recover from the injury, but then cannot live without it. Jason Giambi, former Yankee first baseman, was overweight, slow, and a poor hitter at the beginning of his career. In order to maintain his position on the team, he chose to take steroids after workouts to alter his body. This had an immediate effect, but after he was caught, he went from being a well-rounded player, back to slumps in his game and having to work hard like everyone else. There is also the business standpoint that leaves many people to think that steroids should be legal.Former baseball players Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa put on two of the most memorable baseball seasons in 1998 and 1999. Fans became invested in the home run races, especially in 1998 when McGwire shattered Roger Maris’ 37-year-old single season home run record. More jerseys were sold that offseason than in any other. This view is that steroids will cause many players to break records and there will be an increase in fans. My view is that the players who take steroids and break records are breaking the records of those who actually worked hard and stayed clean while achieving them. This, to me, is a good way to describe the unfairness due to the fact that sports won’t be about achieving greatness and success through hard work, determination, and great talent, but by having some talent and taking lots of steroids. Based upon research and studies of the dramatic effects steroid use, I believe that steroid should remain illegal unless used for medicinal purposes. Reasons being the negative and long lasting effects it can have on one's body, along with the negative effect that they will cause in the change of the integrity and fairness of sports.Numerous anti -doping policies have been created to stop the use of steroids in sports today and I feel that with a strong push towards a clean and fair game, these organizations might be able to nearly eliminate steroids from many sports. Major athletes may enjoy the results but are clueless to extent of the damage it will cause them in the future. Lastly, there is no reason for people to harm their bodies for short term results and according to April Ashby, â€Å"Steroids have no place in sports† (Ashby 1).

Creative Writing Essays

Creative Writing Essays Creative Writing Essay Creative Writing Essay Essay Topic: Creative Creative writing: people can see the same power/powerlessness differently. Compose a narrative showing aspects of power/powerlessness. The fog was lifting, rising off the glossy pristine surface of the motionless lake. There was an eerie aura about the place, bordering on spooky. Something in amongst the shroud of fog moved. Then there came a brilliant ripple that slid over the glassy surface of the lake, assaulting the crystal like state of the surface as it went along. The groups of ripples were amazing, they were perfectly circular. They left behind a broken plastered surface. As the fog continued to lift, it revealed the source of the ripples, a frog. The frog had jumped into the lake and was propelling itself towards the other side. Another burst of ripples shot out from where the frog was. As the frog reached the other side, it slowed down. Just then when the frog was about to leap from the lake onto the shore, a large dragon like figure thrust its head from the dark body of water, and consumed the frog, whole. Alex couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. â€Å"Could it be? † he asked himself. Could this be the legendary water dragon that people had talked about, the urban myth that mothers told their children about during bedtime stories? The next day when Alex strolled through the main street of his town, Springton he approached the Sheriff’s office. As he swung the door open he thought to himself â€Å"what am I going to say? Will the sheriff even believe me? † he didn’t care; he knew it was his duty to report what he had seen the previous night. He nervously walked to the sheriff’s desk. â€Å"What is it now Alex? † demanded the sheriff in an angry impatient tone. I thought you might want to know what I saw last night† replied Alex, he continued â€Å"I saw a large dragon like creature swallow a helpless little frog on the lake last night† â€Å"So, what do I care? † asked the sheriff â€Å"Well, I think it was that water dragon, you know the one that people say is an urban myth† â€Å"Garbage, stop wasting my time, and get out of my office, I am a very busy man, and I don’t have time for pranksters like you. † The sheriff now began to sound very agitated and annoyed with Alex â€Å"But I-† â€Å"I said get out of my office† interrupted the sheriff Alex could do nothing but leave, feeling completely dejected. He knew that what he saw last night was the infamous water dragon, the one that his mother had told him about when he was a boy. He remembered his mother told him that it was dark green in colour, and had lived in the lake for centuries. He also realised that no-one would believe him, unless he had undeniable evidence. Therefore he would have to go back to the lake that night, armed with a camera and a flashlight. Later that evening as the sun was descending below the horizon, and the sky was morphing to a peaceful light colour, Alex packed his camera and flashlight into his shoulder bag, and left his house, for the lake. As Alex pulled up on the side of the road, short of the lake, he turned his car off, and immediately the headlights flickered out, and then total darkness. He silently crept out of his car, and reached for his flashlight. As he flicked his flashlight on, the immediate vicinity was illuminated with a bright white light. He walked around a few trees, and bushes watching where he walked. He saw the glistening surface of the lake shimmering beneath the radiant luminosity of the overhead moon. There was no cloud cover; Alex could see the entire lake. He positioned himself near the edge of the lake, on a mound of earth. He thought this would give him the best opportunity to capture a photo of the monster, if it chose to come out of hiding. After about an hour or so, Alex was feeling rather lethargic. He fought the urge to fall asleep. He sat up and concentrated his eyes on the lake, and continually scanned it for any sign of movement. A large white swan glided down towards the lake from overhead, and landed on the lake, rupturing its purity, sending a wave of wrinkles across the lakes surface. Alex noticed this and hoped that the monster would come out now. A minute passed, and nothing happened. Alex began to lose hope that the monster would come. As the swan began to gracefully glide along the lake, there was a surge of movement beneath the lake which caused Alex to transfer his attention towards it. He pulled out his camera and trained the lens of the camera towards this disruption in the lake. Without any hesitation, Alex began frantically slamming the shutter release button on the camera. The ‘thing’ that was causing all the movement began picking up speed, and was now charging towards the swan. The swan noticed this ‘thing’ and leapt off the lake at full flight and sailed through the air over a few trees. Alex couldn’t believe what he saw. Finally he had proof that the ‘water dragon’ existed, surely the sheriff would believe him now that he had photographical evidence. Early the next morning he casually strolled into the sheriff’s office proudly grasping the freshly developed images from the previous night. He approached the sheriff’s desk and slid them over towards the sheriff. The sheriff picked them up, examined them, and then threw them back at Alex. â€Å"What are these? † he demanded â€Å"Photos I took last night, showing the water dragon in the lake† replied Alex. The sheriff laughed loudly at Alex. â€Å"you expect me to believe this, you just took photos of a large fish in the lake that’s all. † Stated the sheriff Alex couldn’t believe that the sheriff wasn’t believing his evidence. Alex snatched his photos and stormed out of the sheriff’s office. Alex knew that the sheriff always went to the lake over the weekend, to go fishing. Alex knew then that the sheriff would find out the hard way, that Alex was telling the truth. The weekend finally came, it brought with it a bright warm sunny day, perfect for fishing thought Alex. He walked out to his car, and started it up. As he was driving to the lake he wondered if the sheriff would have arrived there already. He hoped so. Alex climbed out of his car, to see the sheriff perched on the edge of the lake, holding his fishing rod in his right hand, and his coffee mug in his left hand. Alex could see the sheriff wasn’t even paying attention to his fishing rod or the lake at all, he was too busy drinking his coffee, and reading the weekend edition of the local newspaper, which was lying on the ground next to the sheriff. As Alex was walking towards the sheriff, his attention was captured by something out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head to see a shadow in the lake silently approach the sheriff and his fishing rod. Although the shadow was silent, it left behind a wave of ripples, fanning out towards the shore. Alex just stood there in awestruck. The shadow reached the end of where the sheriff’s rod entered the water. It violently tugged at the sheriff’s rod. The sheriff felt the tug, and dropped his mug, he stood up immediately and began yanking his rod backwards, whilst reeling the line in. The sheriff was being pulled towards the lake. Alex went over to help the sheriff, just as the sheriff’s fishing line snapped. The shadow in the water thrashed around sadistically, then snapped its jaw around the sheriff’s foot, and began dragging him in. Alex jumped back, and could do nothing but watch in terror as the shadow dragged the sheriff down into the deep abyss. Alex just stood there and muttered under his breath â€Å"I told you so† in a sarcastic tone, as the sheriff disappeared into the lake.

How Do I Find Money to Write a Book

How Do I  Find Money to Write a Book People love to ask this question, a frequented question in my email, but I understand that every day new people decide to become authors. Folks who love reading, or have this burning story inside them, and want to see their work in print. Oh, only if that was all there was to it, right? Many of these sweethearts ask me where to find money to pay for that book. First, I tell them to seriously research whether to self-publish, hybrid publish, or traditionally publish, and if they dont understand the differences, then they are not ready to publish. Writing is only half the job, but then youve heard that before. That and it really costs nothing to actually write the book. Then we talk where money can be found. While this tiny editorial cannot begin to go into detail on each financial availability, it can list the possibilities to at least let you realize your options. One day Ill write a book on all of this. Places to gather money to write a book: 1) Save from your other income. Tithe to your book fund. 2) Take out a loan. If you really believe in yourself and your writing, why not risk taking out that loan? 3) Write freelance. While it might seem all that romantic a task to you, if you need money sooner rather than later, and want to write doing it, then consider freelance writing whether as a copywriter or magazine/blog writer. I strongly suggest trade magazines to get started. 4) Ordinary crowdfunding like Kickstarter.com or Indiegogo.com. PLEASE look at the successful campaigns to see what is involved. If this seems too ominous to you, then you might not be up to the marketing required of a serious writer. 5) Crowdfunding to publish. Go to a site like Publishizer.com and not only earn money and followers, but also a publishing contract. 6) Patreon. Gain monthly followers who are willing to subscribe to your new material, as long as youre willing to write regularly and ingeniously for them. 7) Fiscal agents. This works especially for nonfiction and sometimes memoir. You find a nonprofit that has a like mission and like mind to what youre writing. Ask them to apply for a grant for you, with them being your fiscal agent. They get administrative money and you get grant money. This is a good light-weight article about it https://www.womenarts.org/skills/fiscal_sponsors/ 8) Writing contests. Not steady, but you are furthering your career. 9) Grants. Start with your state or countrys arts council. 10) Speaking. Yes, there is money to be made in speaking, and tons of connections to be made that will indeed open doors. You just have to decide what you are an expert about and be willing to pitch yourself to events. 11) Self-publish ebooks or courses online. You build a platform this way, too. Sorry, but theres no easy way to ask for and be granted funds to write.  You are going to have to think entrepreneurial to achieve funding for your bookunless you are willing to foot the bill yourself and hope that the book sells without that extra oomph of financial support. But trust me, if you make any of the above work well for you, youll be a big step ahead of the game. And youll also show that you know how to manage that entrepreneurial side of yourself.

Young Winston Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Young Winston - Essay Example Young Winston starts with Churchill’s schooldays. Those days are not ideal for the boy and he is not happy. The film unfolds a number of events and eventually the death of his father. Here ends the first part of the film. In the second part Churchill is a cavalry office in India and Sudan. During his service period he participates in the cavalry charge at Omdurman. The film goes on to show us his experiences as a war correspondent in the Second Boer War. In this war Churchill was taken prisoner but he managed to escape. Later on he is elected to the Parliament at an early age of 26. The film jumps from one period to another; it seems that the director was trying to avoid monotony and make his film different from the usual lumbering films. He has used flashbacks and narrations throughout the film to make it interesting. However, at times these get confusing. In the beginning of the film Winston has been shown to be a hopeless depressive. His childhood was not happy, and althoug h he lived in a palace and belonged to a well off family, his parents did not give him the time that a young child requires. Winston’s father was an excellent man in the intellectual sense. But he was complex as well and he could not become a good father or husband. He called Winston his â€Å"biggest disappointment†. ... But this was no surprise – the kind of childhood that he had gotten was expected to have some sort of effect upon the poor boy, and this is what happened. Later on Winston’s father dies after which it seemed that Winston decided to get himself together and stand up for himself. He becomes a soldier following which he starts writing and then gets interested in politics. He created himself and then maintained too. The movie is a great watch. It is an absolutely correct depiction of Winston Churchill’s life. William Manchester’s views regarding the film say that he finds it â€Å"sterile and devoid of conflict†. In the film’s defence it can be said that it was only portraying the real life of Winston, and could not have added anything that did not fit the description. The film makers could not have changed the facts just for some suspense and excitement. That is not to say that the film is not exciting. Several parts of the film do get exciting, not to mention dignified. However, Manchester is right in his view that it â€Å"But [...] one had hoped for more†. The movie could have been even better. When starting a film about the life of a great leader who has done a lot for your country, one automatically expects it to be grand and full of excitement. This film, however, did not exactly give us the human being who is after the facade. Although the film portrayed Winston’s life accurately, it was very much clear that the person we are watching is far from Churchill himself. The film created his image but did not allow us to glance at the personality properly. Young Winston was not able to capture the attention of the audience completely. There are times in the movie when it makes you wonder
